Our History..

The Lions international is a worldwide organisation of people who are working for those less fortunate than ourselves who was found by Melvin Jones in Chicago 1917. He felt that a society of people was needed to help those who are in need, and not a society of "You scratch my back and I'll scratch yours".
Canadians stationed in England during the war turned to the Lions in Canada for relief aid for us. Also during this time Queen Elizabeth (Queen Mother) became involved in its distribution. It wasn't until the second world war the Lions started in England, the first club in 1950 was known then as the London Host Club.
Although the Lions is now a male and female membership. When the Lions started in 1917 it was a 'men only' club, now with over 1.3 million Members in 202 countries worldwide 20% are female.
The Lions are now the worlds largest service organisation, 100% of our funds raised are distributed to those who are in need.
The Lions hospice was founded in 1992 by Gravesend and other local Lion Clubs.
This is one of our proudest achievements and we continue raise funds for the amazing work that it does.  The Lions Hospice is now part of the EllenorLions Hospices.
